The Grand Wailea Luau – Honuaʻula is one of Maui’s most elegant and immersive luau experiences, set on the lush, oceanfront grounds of the Grand Wailea Resort in South Maui. With panoramic sunset views over Wailea Beach and the sounds of traditional Hawaiian music in the background, this luau delivers an unforgettable evening celebrating the myths, legends, and culture of Hawaii.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a fresh flower lei and invited to relax with a welcome beverage as the sun begins to set. A torch lighting ceremony marks the start of the festivities, followed by the dramatic unveiling of the kalua pig from the underground imu oven—a traditional Hawaiian cooking method. This ceremonial moment honors the deep cultural roots of the islands.

A generous island-inspired buffet follows, featuring local favorites such as kalua pork, shoyu chicken, grilled sirloin steak, and macadamia nut-crusted mahi mahi. Vegetarian options and tropical desserts round out the culinary experience, while an open bar serves up classic tropical drinks including Mai Tais and Blue Hawaiians.

The evening’s highlight is the Honuaʻula show, a professionally choreographed production that blends storytelling with traditional Polynesian dance. Through powerful hula, chant, and fire-knife performances, the show tells the legend of Laʻamaikahiki and Moikeha, ancient voyagers who helped shape the Hawaiian islands. Backed by live music and stunning stage effects, the performance honors Hawaii’s deep connection to the sea, its ancestral past, and its spiritual traditions.

Whether you're visiting for the first time or returning to Maui, the Grand Wailea Luau offers a magical blend of cultural authenticity, scenic beauty, and world-class hospitality—an experience that stays with you long after the final drumbeat.

Grand Wailea Resort: Nestled along the sun-drenched coast of South Maui, the Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, is one of Hawaii’s most prestigious beachfront properties. With its grand architecture, lush gardens, cascading waterfalls, and panoramic views of Wailea Beach, the resort offers guests a luxurious retreat steeped in both elegance and island charm.

While many come to the Grand Wailea for its five-star accommodations, full-service spa, and breathtaking pools, one of the most memorable experiences offered here is the resort’s signature luau: the Grand Wailea Luau – Honuaʻula. Held on the hotel’s beautifully manicured oceanfront lawn, this captivating evening brings together the sights, sounds, and flavors of Hawaiian culture in a setting that’s nothing short of magical.

    A Grand Arrival

As guests enter the luau grounds, they are welcomed with a warm aloha and presented with a traditional lei. The energy is festive, yet reverent—a sign that what you’re about to witness is more than just entertainment; it’s a cultural celebration that honors the island’s history and spirit.

Before the feast begins, the ceremonial imu unveiling takes place, where a kalua pig is lifted from an underground oven. This ancient Hawaiian cooking method is not only a culinary tradition, but a symbolic ritual connecting the present to the practices of old Hawaiʻi. It’s a moment of reflection that sets the tone for the evening.

    A Feast of Island Flavors

Dinner at the Grand Wailea Luau is a full Hawaiian buffet that showcases the rich flavors of the islands. Guests enjoy local favorites like slow-roasted kalua pork, shoyu chicken, grilled steak, fresh island fish, steamed vegetables, poi, rice, and tropical fruit salads. A selection of Hawaiian desserts follows, including haupia (coconut pudding), guava cake, and other sweet treats made with local ingredients.

An open bar flows throughout the night, offering classic tropical cocktails such as Mai Tais and Blue Hawaiians, along with wine, beer, juices, and soft drinks. Whether you're enjoying a handcrafted drink or a non-alcoholic refresher, the flavors complement the vibrant energy of the evening.

    Honuaʻula: Storytelling Through Performance

The highlight of the evening is the Honuaʻula show, a theatrical production that brings to life the myths and legends of Maui and greater Polynesia. Honuaʻula means “land of red earth” and refers to an ancient district of Maui. Through hula, chant, music, and fire dancing, the show tells the story of the early Polynesian voyagers who navigated vast distances across the Pacific Ocean to settle the Hawaiian Islands.

Key characters include Pele, the fiery goddess of volcanoes, and Moikeha, a famous navigator whose journey brought him to the shores of Hawaiʻi. Their stories unfold through mesmerizing choreography, vibrant costumes, and emotionally charged performances that educate as much as they entertain.

The show’s grand finale is a spectacular fire-knife dance, performed by skilled artists who spin and toss flaming knives in a dramatic display of athleticism and cultural tradition. The combination of rhythm, light, and movement creates a powerful ending that leaves audiences breathless.

    Setting and Atmosphere

What sets this luau apart from others is its unmatched setting. The oceanfront lawn at the Grand Wailea provides panoramic views of the Pacific, and as the sun sets over the water, the sky turns brilliant shades of orange, pink, and purple—creating a natural backdrop for the performance that feels truly cinematic. With tiki torches flickering and live Hawaiian music in the background, the entire evening becomes an immersive sensory experience.
